However, the reality for many young lawyers in Cyprus is far from this luxurious image. Despite the perception that all lawyers in the country are highly profitable, a significant number struggle with serious employment issues and financial instability.
Recent remarks by Michael Vorkas, the new President of the Cyprus Bar Association, have brought attention to the challenges faced by young lawyers in Cyprus. During a session of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Vorkas highlighted the fact that many young lawyers are grappling with difficulties that are often overshadowed by the profession’s prestigious reputation. These challenges include low pay, long working hours, and a lack of job security.
Nikos Tornaritis, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee and a lawyer with many years of experience, has described the situation as “modern slavery.” He pointed out that young lawyers often work for minimal pay—sometimes referred to as “pittance pay”—despite handling cases worth millions. This disparity between the work they do and the compensation they receive is a significant issue within the profession.
Vorkas also noted that the legal system’s inefficiencies contribute to these employment challenges. Although 300 to 400 law graduates enter the workforce each year, the prolonged duration of court cases and the delays in carrying out court decisions make it difficult for these young professionals to establish stable careers in law. As a result, many young lawyers are forced to look for opportunities in other fields, where they might find better prospects.
The situation faced by young lawyers in Cyprus underscores the need for reforms within the legal profession. Addressing these issues is crucial for ensuring that the next generation of lawyers can thrive in their careers and contribute meaningfully to the legal system.
